ولما استشهد زيد وجعفر وعبد الله بن رواحة في غزوة مؤتة، بدأ النبي (ص) يقول بالمدينة: «أخذ زيد الراية استشهد، ثم أخذ جعفر الراية استشهد». فذهب ثم أخذ عبد الله بن رواحة الراية فاستشهد هو الآخر. فرفع الراية سيف الله خالد بن علي ففتح الله بيده». كان يقول هذا والدموع تتدفق من عينيه. (البخاري 2798) .
When Zayd, Ja'far and Abdullah bin Rawahah (RA) were martyred in the battle of Mu'ta, the Prophet (PBUH) began to say in Medina, "Zayd held the flag, he was martyred. Then Ja'far held the flag, he was martyred." went Then Abdullah bin Rawahah held the flag, he too was martyred. Then a sword of Allah Khaled bin Alid took up the flag and Allah bestowed victory in his hand.” He was saying this, and tears were flowing from his eyes. (Bukhari 2798)
