قال رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم: "إذا دفن الميت أتاه ملكان أسودان أزرق العينين، يقال لأحدهما منكر والآخر نكير". ماذا تقول في هذا الشأن؟ قال: هكذا كان يقول عبد الله ورسوله. وأشهد أن لا إله إلا الله وأن محمداً عبده ورسوله». قالوا: قد علمنا أنك تقول ذلك. والذراع تقاس بالطول وسبعين ذراعا بالعرض. ثم يتم إضاءته. فقيل له: اذهب إلى النوم. قال: أرجع إلى أهلي فأخبرهم. ولن يوقظه أحد إلا أعز أهله. وأخيراً سيبعثه الله من هذا السرير. (الترمذي 1071، ج: صحيح 1391)
The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said, "When a dead person is buried, two black angels with blue eyes come to him. One is called 'Munkir' and the other is called 'Nakir.' What do you say about it?' He said, 'That is what he used to say, the servant of Allah and His Messenger. I bear witness that there is no (true) god but Allah and Muhammad is His servant and His Messenger.' They said, 'We knew that you would say that.' A cubit is measured in length and seventy cubits in breadth. Then it is illuminated. Then it was said to him, 'Go to sleep.' He said, 'I will go back to my family and inform them.' No one will wake him except the dearest of his family.' Finally Allah will resurrect him from this bed. (Tirmidhi 1071, C: Sahih 1391)
