Hushaym told us, Abu Bishr told us, on the authority of Saeed bin Jubayr, on the authority of Ibn Abbas, he said: This verse was revealed while the Messenger of God, may God bless him and grant him peace He, peace and blessings be upon him, is hidden in Mecca. {And do not say your prayer loudly, and do not be silent in it.} He said: When he prayed with his companions, he raised his voice with the Qur’an. He said: When the polytheists heard that, they reviled the Qur’an, and whoever sent it down, and whoever brought it, and God Almighty said to His Prophet, may God bless him and grant him peace, {And not Proclaim your prayers loudly, that is, with your recitation, and the polytheists will hear and curse the Qur’an, and do not be afraid thereof, on the authority of your companions. You teach them the Qur’an until they learn it from you, and seek a way in between.
