Musnad Ahmad — Hadith #44831

Muhammad ibn Ja`far told us, Shu`bah told us, on the authority of Simak, he said: I heard Iyad al-Ash`ari, he said: I witnessed Yarmouk and over us were five princes, Abu Ubaidah bin Al-Jarrah, Yazid bin Abi Sufyan, Ibn Hasanah, Khaled bin Al-Walid, and Iyad, and Iyad is not what happened. Samaka, he said, and Omar, may God be pleased with him, said, “If there is fighting, then Abu Ubaidah is upon you.” He said, “So we wrote to him, saying that death has come upon us.” We summoned him, and he wrote to us, “Your letter has come to me asking you to seek help from me, and I will guide you to the one who is more powerful in victory and who will bring an army.” God Almighty, the Most Majestic, so seek help from Him, for Muhammad, may God’s prayers and peace be upon him, was supported on the Day of Badr in less than your number. So when this letter of mine comes to you So fight them and do not withdraw from me. He said, “So we fought them, and we defeated them and killed them by four farsakhs.” He said, “And we gained wealth.” So they consulted, and Iyad advised us to give ten for each head. He said, and Abu Ubaidah said, “Who is betting on me?” A young man said, “I am, unless you get angry.” He said, “He overtook him, and I saw Abu Ubaidah’s legs jumping, and he was behind him on an Arabian horse.”
