Sunan ad-Darimi — Hadith #55564

Muhammad bin Ja`far al-Mada'ani told us, Shu'bah told us, on the authority of Sa`id bin Abi Burdah, on the authority of his father, on the authority of Abu Musa al-Ash'ari, He said: The Messenger of God, may God bless him and grant him peace, said: “Every Muslim must give charity.” They said: O Messenger of God, if he cannot or will not do it? He said: “ He works with his hands and eats from it and gives in charity.” They said: “What do you think if he does not do that?” He said: “He helps the needy and anxious person.” They said: “What do you think if he does not do that?” He does it? He said: “He commands good.” They said: What do you think if he does not do it? He said: “He refrains from evil, for it is charity for him.”
