What is Azan and Iqamat?

1. What is Azan? The word Azan (الذان) means to announce, call or inform. In Islamic terms, the time for the obligatory prayer has begun—the adhan is the announcement made through a prescribed phrase to call the congregation to prayer. says عَنْ مَالِكِ بْنِ الحُوَيْرِثِ, أَتَيْتُ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فِي نَفَرٍ مِنْ قَوْمِي, فَأَقَمْنَا عِنْدَهُ عِشْرِينَ لَيْلَةً, وَكَانَ رَحِيمًا رَفِيقًا, فَلَمَّا رَأَى شَوْقَنَا إِلَى أَهَالِينَا, قَالَ: «ارْجِعُوا فَكُونُوا فِيهِمْ, وَعَلِمُوهُمْ, وَصَلُّوا فَإِذَا حَضَرَتِ الصَّلَةُ فَلْيُؤَذِّنْ لَكُمْ أَحَدُكُمْ, وَلْيَؤُمَّكُمْ أَكْبَرُكُمْ» On the authority of Malik Ibn Huwayris (RA), he said, I came to the Prophet (ﷺ) with some people from my tribe and we stayed with him for twenty nights. The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) was very kind and friendly was When He noticed among us the desire to return to our kinsmen, He said to us: Go back to your kinsmen and live among them, and teach them their religion and offer prayers. When the prayer time appears, then One of you will give the call to prayer and the elder among you will lead the Imam.- Sahih Bukhari, Hadith No: 600 International No: 628 الْمَدِينَةَ يَجْتَمِعُونَ فَيَتَحَيَّنُونَ الصَّلَوَاتِ وَلَيْسَ يُنَادِي بِهَا أَحَدٌ فَتَكَلَّمُوا يَوْمًا فِي ذَلِكَ فَقَالَ بَعْضُهُمُ اتَّخِذُوا نَاقُوسًا مِثْلَ نَاقُوسِ النَّصَارَى وَقَالَ بَعْضُهُم قَرْنًا مِثْلَ قَرْنِ الْيَهُودِ فَقَالَ عُمَرُ أَوَلَ تَبْعَثُونَ رَجُلاً يُنَادِي بِالصَّلَةِ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلمِ بِالصَّلَةِ " . Narrated by Abdullah Ibn Umar (RA). He said, after coming to Madinah, the Muslims used to gather together and pray at certain times. No one used to give adhan for this. One day they discussed the matter among themselves. One of them said, "Like Nachus of Nazareth." Use a conch. Another of them said, Use a horn like the Jew's horn. Umar (RA) said, Why don't you send a person to call for prayer? The Prophet (ﷺ) said: O Bilal! Get up and call for prayer (adhan).-Sahih Muslim: Hadith No: 723 International No: 377 2. What is Iqamat? The word Iqamat (العقامة) means to set up, to establish or to begin. In Islamic terms, the prayer of the worshipers through a set phrase just before the commencement of the obligatory prayer in congregation The announcement to stand is called Iqamat. عَنْ أَنَسٍ, قَالَ: «أُمِرَ بِلاَلٌ أَنْ يَشْفَعَ الأَذَانََ, وَأَنْ يُوتِرَ الإِقَامَةَ إِلَّا الإِقَامَةَ» Narrated by Anas (RA), who said, Bilal (RA) was called to prayer twice and except for قد قامت الصلاة The words of Ikamat It was ordered to say oddly.-Sahih Bukhari, Hadith No: 578, International No: 605

Azan and answer to Azan

اَللهُ اَكْبَرْ

উত্তরে বলবে:

اَللهُ اَكْبَرْ

(৪ বার )

اَشْهَدُ اَنْ لَّا اِلٰهَ اِلَّا اللهْ

উত্তরে বলবে:

اَشْهَدُ اَنْ لَّا اِلٰهَ اِلَّا الله

( ২ বার )

اَشْهَدُ اَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا رَّسُوْلُ اللهِ

উত্তরে বলবে:

اَشْهَدُ اَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا رَّسُوْلُ اللهِ

( ২ বার )

حَيَّ عَلَي الصَّلٰوةِ

উত্তরে বলবে:

لَا حَوْلَ وَ لَا قُوَّةَ اِلَّا بِاللهِ

(২ বার)

حَيَّ عَلَي الفَلَاحِ

উত্তরে বলবে:

لَا حَوْلَ وَ لَا قُوَّةَ اِلَّا بِاللهِ

(২ বার )

(শুধুমাত্র ফজরের সময়)

اَلصّلٰوةُ خَيْرٌمِّنَ النَّوْمِ

উত্তরে বলবে:

صَدَقْتَ وَ بَرَرْتَ

(২ বার)

اَللهُ اَكْبَرْ

উত্তরে বলবে:

اَللهُ اَكْبَرْ

(২ বার )

لَا اِلٰهَ اِلَّا الله

উত্তরে বলবে:

لَا اِلَهَ اِلَّا الله

Pronunciation

Allaahu akbr uttrh allaahu akbr (4 bar) ashhadual laa ilaha illallah uttrh ashhadual laa ilaha illallah (2 bar) ashhaduanna muhammadar rasulullah uttrh ashhaduanna muhammadar rasulullah (2 bar) haiya alas sala uttrh la hawla wala kuwata illabillah (2 bar) haiya alal fala uttrh la hawla wala kuwata illabillah (2 bar) (shudhumatr fzrer azaner jny) assalatu khairum minan naum uttrh sadakta o bararta (2 bar) allaahu akbr uttrh allaahu akbar (2 bar) la ilaha illallah uttrh la ilaha illallah (1 bar)

Meaning

Allah is Almighty Answer: Allah is Almighty (4 times) I bear witness that there is no god but Allah Answer: I bear witness that there is no god but Allah (2 times) I bear witness that Muhammad (PBUH) is the Messenger of Allah Answer: I bear witness that Muhammad (pbuh) is the messenger of Allah (2 times) Come for prayer Answer: No one has any power but Allah's protection and power (2 times) Come for success Answer: No one has any power but Allah's protection and power (only For Fajr Azan) Prayer is better than sleep Answer: He spoke the truth, spoke of goodness (2 times) Allah is great Answer: Allah is great (2 times) There is no god but Allah Answer: There is no god but Allah (1 time)

Dua to be recited at the end of Azaan

۞ اَللّٰهُمَّ رَبَّ هٰذِهِ الدَّعْوَةِ التَّآمَّةِ وَالصَّلَاةِ الْقَائِمَةِ اٰتِ مُحَمَّدَنِ الْوَسِيْلَةَ وَالْفَضِيْلَةَ وَابْعَثْهُ مَقَامًا مَّحْمُوْدَنِ الَّذِيْ وَعَدْتَّهٗ. اِنَّكَ لَاۤ تُخْلِفُ الْمِيْعَادَ
Pronunciation

Allahumma rabbahaazihid da'watittammah, was salatil kaaimah, aati muhammadanil wasilata wal fadilah, wab'ashu makamam mahmudanillazi wa 'attah, innaka laatukhliful miyad.

Meaning

O Allah! (Thou art) the Lord of perfect invocation and perpetual prayer. You make Muhammad (ﷺ) appear in the place of nearness, greatness and most praise (i.e. in Maqam Mahmud) which You promised him. Surely you never Don't break promises.

Virtue

It is narrated from Hazrat Jaber Ibn Abdullah (ra) that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said, "Whoever recites this dua after hearing the call to prayer, my intercession will be obligatory for him on the Day of Resurrection."

Iqamat and answer to Iqamat

اَللهُ اَكْبَرْ

الرد: اَللهُ اَكْبَرْ

اَشْهَدُ اَنْ لَّا اِلٰهَ اِلَّا اللهْ

الرد: اَشْهَدُ اَنْ لَّا اِلٰهَ اِلَّا اللهْ

اَشْهَدُ اَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا رَّسُوْلُ اللهِ

الرد: اَشْهَدُ اَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا رَّسُوْلُ اللهِ

( ২ বার )

حَيَّ عَلَي الصَّلوةِ

الرد: لَا حَوْلَ وَ لَا قُوَّةَ اِلَّا بِاللهِ

(২ বার)

حَيَّ عَلَي الفَلَاحِ

الرد: لَا حَوْلَ وَ لَا قُوَّةَ اِلَّا بِاللهِ

(২ বার )

(শুধুমাত্র ঈকামাতের সময়)

قَدْ قَامَتِ الصَّلاَةُ

الرد: أَقَامَهَا اللهُ وَأَدَامَهَا

Meaning

Allah is Almighty Answer: Allah is Almighty (4 times) I bear witness that there is no god but Allah Answer: I bear witness that there is no god but Allah (2 times) I bear witness that Muhammad (PBUH) is the Messenger of Allah Answer: I bear witness that Muhammad (pbuh) is the Messenger of Allah (2 times) Come for prayer Answer: No one has any power except the protection and power of Allah (2 times) Come for success Answer: No one has any power but the protection and power of Allah (2 times) (Only for Iqamat) Standing Prayer Answer: May Allah grant the Tawfeeq of standing prayer and keep it always. (2 times) Allah is great Answer: Allah is great (2 times) There is no god but Allah Answer: There is no god but Allah (1 bar)

Dua to read at the end of Azaan-2

۞ اَللّٰهُمَّ رَبَّ هٰذِهِ الدَّعْوَةِ التَّامَّةِ، وَالصَّلَاةِ النَّافِعَةِ، صَلِّ عَلٰى مُحَمَّدٍ، وَارْضَ عَنْهُ رِضًا لَا سَخَطَ بَعْدَهُ
Pronunciation

Allahuma rabba haazihid da'watit taammati was salatin nafiya, salle ala muhammadin, aarda annirizan, la taskhatu ba'dahu.

Meaning

O Allah! O Lord of this perfect dua, and owner of beneficial prayer, send down mercy upon Muhammad, and be pleased with me, that after that satisfaction be no more displeased,
Then Allah accepted his dua.
