Jami' at-Tirmidhi — Hadith #26618

Hanad narrated to us, Abu Bakr bin Ayyash narrated to us, on the authority of Abu Ishaq, on the authority of Al-Harith, on the authority of Ali, who said that the Prophet, may God’s prayers and peace be upon him, used to pray Witr with three He recites nine surahs from Al-Mufassal in them. And Abd al-Rahman bin Abza, on the authority of Ubayy bin Ka’b, and it is also narrated. This is how some of them narrated it, but they did not mention in it on the authority of Ubay, and some of them mentioned on the authority of Abd Al-Rahman bin Abza, on the authority of Ubayy. Abu Issa said, “A group of people of knowledge among the Companions of the Prophet, may God bless him and grant him peace, and others have held this view.” They thought that the man should pray the Witr with three. Sufyan said: If you wish, you may pray the Witr with five, and if you wish, you may pray the Witr with three, and if you wish, you may pray the Witr with three. With one rak’ah. Sufyan said, “What I prefer is to pray the Witr prayer with three rak’ahs.” This is the saying of Ibn al-Mubarak and the people of Kufa. He told us.
