Harun bin Ishaq Al-Hamdani told us, Abdah bin Sulayman told us, on the authority of Hisham bin Urwa, on the authority of his father, on the authority of Aisha, she said Ashura was a day that the Quraysh fasted in pre-Islamic times, and the Messenger of God, may God bless him and grant him peace, used to fast on it. When he came to Medina, he fasted on it and commanded the people. With his fasting, when Ramadan was assumed, Ramadan was the obligatory prayer, and he left off Ashura, so whoever wished may fast it, and whoever wished may leave it. And in the chapter about Ibn Masoud, Qais bin Saad, Jabir bin Samurah, Ibn Omar, and Muawiyah. Abu Issa said, according to the people of knowledge, the work is based on the hadith. Aisha, and it is an authentic hadith. They do not consider fasting on the day of Ashura obligatory, except for those who wish to fast it due to the virtue mentioned in it.
