Musnad Ahmad — Hadith #45044

Abu Saeed told us, Israel told us, Sammak told us, on the authority of Hanash, on the authority of Ali, may God be pleased with him. He said the Messenger of God, may God’s prayers and peace be upon him, sent me. And he was delivered to Yemen, and we ended up with a people who had built a lion’s enclosure. While they were fighting each other, a man fell. Then he clung to another, then one man clung to another until there were four of them, and the lion wounded them, so a man charged at him with a spear, and killed him, and they died from there. They were all wounded, so the guardians of the first stood up to the guardians of the other, and they took out weapons to fight, so Ali, may God be pleased with him, came to them. On the authority of him, on the occasion of that, he said: Do you want to fight while the Messenger of God, may God bless him and grant him peace, is alive? I will make a judgment between you, if you are satisfied with it. Otherwise, some of you will withhold from one another until you come to the Prophet, may God bless him and grant him peace, and he will be the one who judges between you. Whoever goes beyond that has no right. Collect from the tribes of those who dug the well a quarter of the blood money, a third of the blood money, half of the blood money, and a full blood money. So for the first one is a quarter, because those above him perished, and for the second one is a third of the blood money, and for the third is half of the blood money, but they refused to be satisfied, so they came. The Prophet, may God bless him and grant him peace, was at the place of Abraham, so they told him the story, and he said, “I will judge between you.” He hid, and a man from the people said, Ali judged among us, so they told him the story, and the Messenger of God, may God bless him and grant him peace, granted him permission. Bahz told us. Hammad told us, Simak told us, on the authority of Hanash, that Ali, may God be pleased with him, said, “The blood money is due for the fourth.”
