Riyad as-Salihin — Hadith #46625

On the authority of Hammam bin Al-Harith, on the authority of Al-Miqdad, may God be pleased with him, the mother of a man who started praising Uthman, may God be pleased with him. So Al-Miqdad baptized, and he knelt down and began to rub gravel in his face. Uthman said to him: What is your business? He said: The Messenger of God, may God’s prayers and peace be upon him, said: “If you see those praising people, throw dust in their faces.” (Narrated by Muslim). The scholars said: The way to combine the hadiths is to say: If the one being praised has perfect faith, certainty, self-control, and complete knowledge such that he is not tempted, nor is he deceived by it, nor is he playing with himself, then it is not forbidden or objectionable, and if one of these matters is feared for him, he strongly dislikes praising him to his face, and based on this detail the various hadiths regarding that are revealed. Among the permissibility is his statement, may God bless him and grant him peace, to Ubayy. Bakr, may God be pleased with him, said: “I hope that you will be one of them,” that is, one of those who are called upon from all gates of Paradise to enter it, and in the other hadith: “I am not one of them,” meaning: I am not one of those who let down their loins out of arrogance.
