أَخْبَرَنَا الْحَكَمُ بْنُ نَافِعٍ ، عَنْ شُعَيْبِ بْنِ أَبِي حَمْزَةَ ، عَنْ الزُّهْرِيِّ ، حَدَّثَنِي عَامِرُ بْنُ وَاثِلَةَ : أَنَّ نَافِعَ بْنَ عَبْدِ الْحَارِثِ لَقِيَ عُمَرَ بْنَ الْخَطَّابِ بِعُسْفَانَ ، وَكَانَ عُمَرُ اسْتَعْمَلَهُ عَلَى أَهْلِ مَكَّةَ ، فَسَلَّمَ عَلَى عُمَرَ، فَقَالَ لَهُ عُمَرُ : مَنْ اسْتَخْلَفْتَ عَلَى أَهْلِ الْوَادِي؟ فَقَالَ نَافِعٌ : اسْتَخْلَفْتُ عَلَيْهِمْ ابْنَ أَبْزَى، فَقَالَ عُمَرُ : وَمَنْ ابْنُ أَبْزَى؟ فَقَالَ : مَوْلًى مِنْ مَوَالِينَا، فَقَالَ عُمَرُ : فَاسْتَخْلَفْتَ عَلَيْهِمْ مَوْلًى؟ فَقَالَ : يَا أَمِيرَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ، إِنَّهُ قَارِئٌ لِكِتَابِ اللَّهِ، عَالِمٌ بِالْفَرَائِضِ، فَقَالَ عُمَرُ : أَمَا إِنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، قَالَ :" إِنَّ اللَّهَ يَرْفَعُ بِهَذَا الْكِتَابِ أَقْوَامًا، وَيَضَعُ بِهِ آخَرِينَ "
Al-Hakam bin Nafi’ told us, on the authority of Shuaib bin Abi Hamza, on the authority of Al-Zuhri, Aamir bin Wathilah narrated to me: Nafi’ bin Abd Al-Harith Omar ibn al-Khattab met with Usfan, and Omar had appointed him over the people of Mecca, so he greeted Omar, and Omar said to him: Who have you appointed as successor to the people of Mecca? The valley? Nafi’ said: I appointed Ibn Abza as their successor. Omar said: Who is Ibn Abza? He said: A master of ours. Omar said: So you left a master over them? He said: O Commander of the Faithful, he is a reader of the Book of God and knowledgeable of the religious duties. Omar said: As for the Messenger of God May God’s prayers and peace be upon him, he said: “Indeed, God raises some people with this book, and brings others down with it.”
