Jami' at-Tirmidhi — Hadith #27570

Ahmad bin Mani’ told us, Hushaym told us, Mutarrif told us, on the authority of Al-Sha’bi, Abu Juhayfa told us, he said, I said to Ali, O Commander of the Faithful Do you have black and white? It is not in the Book of God. He said, No. By the one who split the grain and healed the breath, I have not known him except understanding. God will give him a man in the Qur’an and what is in the scroll. I said, and what is in the scroll, he said, “In it is reason and the redemption of a prisoner, and that a believer should not be killed for an unbeliever.” He said, and on the authority of Abdullah bin Amr. Abu Issa said: The hadith of Ali is a good and authentic hadith. This should be acted upon when Some people of knowledge, and this is the opinion of Sufyan al-Thawri, Malik ibn Anas, al-Shafi’i, Ahmad, and Ishaq, said that a believer should not be killed for an unbeliever. Some people of knowledge said that a Muslim should be killed for making treaties. The first saying is more correct.
