Jami' at-Tirmidhi — Hadith #27202

Qutaibah narrated to us, Al-Layth bin Saad narrated to us, on the authority of Yahya bin Saeed, on the authority of Waqid, who is Ibn Amr bin Saad bin Muadh, on the authority of Nafi’ Ibn Jubayr, on the authority of Masoud Ibn Al-Hakam, on the authority of Ali Ibn Abi Talib, that he mentioned standing at funerals until they are laid, and he said, “Ali, the Messenger of God, has risen.” He prayed May God bless him and grant him peace. Then he sat. On the authority of Al-Hasan bin Ali and Ibn Abbas. Abu Issa said: The hadith of Ali is a good and authentic hadith. And there is a narration in it. Four of the followers of one another, and this is acted upon according to some of the people of knowledge. Al-Shafi’i said, “This is the most correct thing.” In this section, this hadith abrogates the first hadith: “If you see the funeral, stand up.” And Ahmad said, “If he wishes, he can stand up.” He wanted to, but he did not stand up. He used as evidence that the Prophet, may God bless him and grant him peace, was narrated from him that he stood up and then sat down. And so said Ishaq bin Ibrahim. Abu Issa said the meaning of Ali’s saying: The Messenger of God, may God bless him and grant him peace, stood up at the funeral and then sat down. He says that whenever the Messenger of God, may God bless him and grant him peace, saw the funeral He got up and then left that after, so he would not get up when he saw the funeral.
