Jami' at-Tirmidhi — Hadith #29833

Harun bin Abdullah Al-Bazzaz Al-Baghdadi told us, he said, Al-Fadl bin Dukain told us, he said Hisham bin Saad told us, on the authority of Zaid bin Aslam, on the authority of his father, he said: I heard Omar ibn al-Khattab saying: The Messenger of God, may God’s prayers and peace be upon him, commanded us to give alms, and that amounted to money for me. So I said, “Today I will outpace Abu Bakr if I ever outpaced him.” He said, “I brought half of my wealth.” The Messenger of God, may God bless him and grant him peace, said, “I have not left for your family.” I said the same thing, and Abu Bakr came with everything he had and said, “O Abu Bakr, I have not left anything for your family.” And His Messenger, I said, “By God, I will never precede him in anything.” This is a good and authentic hadith.
