Jami' at-Tirmidhi — Hadith #26983

Ahmad bin Mani’ told us, Ismail bin Ibrahim told us, on the authority of Ayyub, on the authority of Nafi’, on the authority of Ibn Umar, that the prayer of the Prophet, may God bless him and grant him peace, was “At your service, O God, at your service, you have no partner. Indeed, praise and blessings are yours and dominion, you have no partner.” He said. On the authority of Ibn Masoud, Jabir, Aisha, Ibn Abbas, and Abu Hurairah. Abu Issa said the hadith of Ibn Umar is a good and authentic hadith. It is acted upon according to some people of knowledge among the Companions of the Prophet, may God bless him and grant him peace, and others. This is the view of Sufyan, Al-Shafi’i, and Ahmad. And Ishaq. Al-Shafi’i said, “If he adds to the talbiyah some glorification of God, then there is no problem, God willing, and I prefer that he limit himself to reciting the talbiyah.” The Messenger of God, may God bless him and grant him peace. Al-Shafi’i said, “We only said that there is no harm in adding God’s veneration in it, according to what was reported on the authority of Ibn Umar.” He preserved the talbiyah from the Messenger of God, may God bless him and grant him peace. Then Ibn Umar added in his reciting the talbiyah from him, “Labbayk wa al-Rughba’ to you and deeds.”
