Jami' at-Tirmidhi — Hadith #27688

The action on this according to most of the people of knowledge among the companions of the Prophet, may God bless him and grant him peace, and others is that Expiation before breaking the oath is sufficient. This is the opinion of Malik bin Anas, Al-Shafi’i, Ahmad, and Ishaq. Some people of knowledge said no. He is to disbelieve only after breaking the oath. Sufyan al-Thawri said: If he disbelieves after breaking the oath, it is more beloved to me, and if he disbelieves before breaking the oath, it will be sufficient for him.
