Jami' at-Tirmidhi — Hadith #28586

Abdullah bin Muhammad al-Zuhri al-Basri told us, Malik bin Sa’ir Abu Muhammad al-Tamimi al-Kufi told us, al-A’mash told us, on the authority of Abu Salih, On the authority of Abu Hurairah and on the authority of Abu Sa`id, they said: The Messenger of God, may God bless him and grant him peace, said: “The servant will be brought on the Day of Resurrection Then God will say to him, “Did I not give you hearing, sight, wealth, and children, and subjugated to you the livestock and the tillage, and left you to rule and occupy, and you thought? “You will meet me on this day.” He said, “No.” So he says to him, “Today I have forgotten you just as you have forgotten me.” Abu Issa said: This is an authentic hadith. Strange. The meaning of his saying, “Today I forget you.” He says, “Today I will leave you in torment.” This is how they explained it. Abu Issa said. Some scholars have interpreted this verse as: (Today We will forget them.) They said that its meaning is: Today We will leave them in torment.
