Jami' at-Tirmidhi — Hadith #29101

Al-Hasan bin Ali Al-Khallal, and more than one, told us, they said, Abdul Razzaq told us, Muammar told us, on the authority of Al-Zuhri, on the authority of Urwa bin Al-Zubayr, On the authority of Al-Miswar ibn Makhramah and Abd al-Rahman ibn Abd al-Qari, they told him that they heard Umar ibn al-Khattab saying I passed by Hisham bin Hakim bin Hazzam while he was reciting Surat Al-Furqan during the life of the Messenger of God, may God bless him and grant him peace, so I listened to him reciting, and behold, he He recited in many letters that the Messenger of God, may God bless him and grant him peace, did not recite to me. So I almost followed his bracelets during prayer and looked at him until he said the salaam. He handed him his cloak and said, “Who recited to you this surah that I heard you reciting?” He said, “The Messenger of God, may God bless him and grant him peace, recited it to me.” He said. I told him, “You lied. By God, the Messenger of God, may God’s prayers and peace be upon him, had just recited to me this surah that you are reciting.” So I set off to lead him. To the Prophet, may God bless him and grant him peace, and I said, O Messenger of God, I heard this man reciting Surat Al-Furqan in letters that you did not recite, while you recited Surah Al-Furqan to me. Al-Furqan. Then the Prophet, may God’s prayers and peace be upon him, said, “Send him, O Omar, to read, O Hisham.” So he recited to him the recitation that I heard it, and the Prophet, may God bless him and grant him peace, said, “This is how it was revealed.” Then the Prophet, may God bless him and grant him peace, said, “Read, O Umar.” So I recited the recitation that The Prophet, may God’s prayers and peace be upon him, informed me, and the Prophet, may God’s prayers and peace be upon him, said, “This is how it was revealed.” Then the Prophet, may God’s prayers and peace be upon him, said “This Qur’an was revealed in seven letters, so recite as much of it as is possible.” This is a hasan and authentic hadith. Malik narrated Ibn Anas, on the authority of Al-Zuhri, with this chain of transmission similar to it, except that he did not mention Al-Miswar ibn Makhramah in it.
