Jami' at-Tirmidhi — Hadith #29485

Ibn Abi Omar told us, Sufyan told us, on the authority of Mujalid, on the authority of Al-Sha’bi, on the authority of Jabir bin Abdullah, he said: Some of the Jews said to people of The Companions of the Prophet, may God bless him and grant him peace, does your Prophet know how many keepers of Hell there are? They said, “We do not know until we ask our Prophet.” Then a man came. To the Prophet, may God bless him and grant him peace, and he said, “O Muhammad, your companions were defeated today.” He said, “And by what they were defeated.” He said, “The Jews asked them, ‘Do your Prophet know? How many are the keepers of Hell? He said, “And what did they say?” They said, “We do not know until we ask our Prophet.” He said, “Have a people been defeated when they were asked?” About what they do not know, so they said, “We do not know until we ask our Prophet.” But they had asked their Prophet, so they said, “Show us God, openly speaking against the enemies of God. He asked them about the soil of Paradise, which is the dirt. “And when they came, they said, ‘O Abu al-Qasim, how many are the keepers of Hell?’ He said.” “And so and so.” On the tenth occasion and on the ninth occasion. They said, “Yes.” The Prophet, may God bless him and grant him peace, said to them, “What is the soil of Paradise?” He said: They were silent for a while, then they said: Bread, O Abu al-Qasim. Then the Messenger of God, may God bless him and grant him peace, said: “Bread from your own caramel.” He said this. It is a strange hadith, but we know it from this side, from the hadith of Mujalid.
