Qutaibah narrated to us, on the authority of Malik, h. Al-Ansari narrated to us, Ishaq bin Musa narrated to us, Ma’n narrated to us, Malik narrated to us, on the authority of Safwan bin Sulaym, on the authority of Sa`id bin Salamah, from the family of Ibn al-Azraq, that Al-Mughirah bin Abi Burdah, who is from Banu Abd al-Dar, told him that he heard Abu Hurairah, He says: A man asked the Messenger of God, may God bless him and grant him peace, and he said, “O Messenger of God, we go by sea and carry with us a little water. If we perform ablution with it,” We were thirsty. Should we perform ablution with sea water? Then the Messenger of God, may God bless him and grant him peace, said, “It is pure. Its water is permissible. Its dead bodies are permissible.” He said. On the authority of Jabir and Al-Farasi, Abu Issa said: This is a hasan and authentic hadith. It is the opinion of most of the jurists among the companions of the Prophet, may God bless him and grant him peace. Among them were Abu Bakr, Omar, and Ibn Abbas. They did not see anything wrong with sea water. Some of the companions of the Prophet, may God bless him and grant him peace, disliked it. Performing ablution with sea water. Among them were Ibn Umar and Abdullah bin Amr. Abdullah bin Amr said it is fire.
