Jami' at-Tirmidhi — Hadith #26741

On the authority of Abu al-Darda’ that he was asked about a man who entered the mosque while the people were performing the afternoon prayer, thinking that it was the noon prayer, so he led them. He said his prayer is permissible. Some of the people of Kufa said: If a people trusts an imam while he is praying the afternoon prayer and they think that it is Noon So he led them in prayer and they imitated him, for the prayer of the one who follows him is invalid, as the intention of the imam and the intention of the one being led differed.
