Jami' at-Tirmidhi — Hadith #27020

Ibn Abi Umar told us, Sufyan bin Uyaynah told us, on the authority of Ja`far bin Muhammad, on the authority of his father, on the authority of Jabir, that when the Prophet, may God bless him and grant him peace, came to Mecca, he circumambulated In the house seven days, and he came to the shrine and recited: (And make from the place of Abraham a place of prayer.) So he prayed behind the shrine, then He came to the stone, picked it up, and then said, “We will begin with what God has begun.” So he began with As-Safa and recited: “Indeed, Al-Safa and Al-Marwah are from The rituals of God. Abu Issa said: This is a good and authentic hadith. The action on this according to the people of knowledge is that it begins with the Safa. Before the wedding If he starts with Al-Marwah before Al-Safa, it is not permissible for him to do so, but he started with Al-Safa. The people of knowledge differed as to who circumambulated the House and did not circumambulate between Al-Safa. And Al-Marwah until he returned, and some of the people of knowledge said: If he did not circumambulate between Al-Safa and Al-Marwah until he left Mecca, then if he mentioned while he was near From there he returned and circumambulated between Al-Safa and Al-Marwah, and if he did not mention it until he came to his country, then he will suffice for it, and there must be blood on him. This is the saying of Sufyan Al-Thawri. Some of them said that if he abandons tawaf between Safa and Marwah until he returns to his country, it will not be sufficient for it. This is the opinion of Al-Shafi’i. He said that tawaf between Safa and Marwah is obligatory and Hajj is not permissible without it.
