Jami' at-Tirmidhi — Hadith #26563

Ahmad bin Mani’ told us, Hushaym told us, Ismail bin Abi Khalid told us, on the authority of Al-Harith bin Shubail, on the authority of Abu Amr Al-Shaybani, on the authority of Zayd bin Arqam, said: We used to speak behind the Messenger of God, may God bless him and grant him peace, during prayer. One of us would speak to his companion next to him until It was revealed: (And stand up to God in obedience.) So we were commanded to remain silent and forbidden from speaking. He said, and in the chapter on the authority of Ibn Masoud and Muawiyah Ibn Al-Hakam. Abu Issa said that the hadith of Zayd ibn Arqam is a hasan and authentic hadith. It is acted upon according to most of the people of knowledge. They said then The man spoke intentionally during prayer or forgot and repeated the prayer. This is the opinion of Sufyan al-Thawri, Ibn al-Mubarak, and the people of Kufa. He said If some of them spoke intentionally during the prayer, they would repeat the prayer, but if they forgot or were ignorant, that would be sufficient. This is what Al-Shafi’i says.
