Jami' at-Tirmidhi — Hadith #26851

Ali bin Hajar told us, Ismail bin Jafar told us, Muhammad bin Abi Harmala told us, Kurayb told me that Umm al-Fadl was the daughter of Al-Harith, I sent him to Muawiyah in the Levant. He said, “So I came to the Levant and fulfilled her needs, and the crescent of Ramadan began for me while I was in the Levant.” We saw the crescent on Friday night, then I came to Medina at the end of the month, and Ibn Abbas asked me. Then he mentioned the crescent and said, “When did you see the crescent?” I said. We saw him on Friday night. He said, “Did you see him on Friday night?” I said, “The people saw him and fasted, and Muawiyah fasted.” He said, “But we saw him on Saturday night, so we will continue fasting until we complete thirty days or we see him.” So I said, “Don’t you be satisfied with seeing Muawiyah?” And about his fasting, he said, “No, this is what the Messenger of God, may God bless him and grant him peace, commanded us.” Abu Issa said, “The hadith of Ibn Abbas is a good, authentic, and strange hadith.” The interpretation of this hadith according to the people of knowledge is that every people of a country has their own vision.
