Jami' at-Tirmidhi — Hadith #27628

Ibn Abi Umar told us, Sufyan told us, on the authority of Mujalid, on the authority of Al-Sha’bi, on the authority of Adi bin Hatim, he said, I asked the Messenger of God, may God bless him and grant him peace, about dog hunting. The teacher said, “If you send your trained dog and mention the name of God, eat whatever it catches from you, and if it eats, do not eat.” He only held it against himself. “I said, ‘O Messenger of God, have you seen if our dogs mix with other dogs?’” He said, “I only mentioned the name of God over Your dog and you did not mention anything else.” Sufyan said, “I hate for him to eat it.” Abu Issa said, “And this is acted upon by some of the people of Science Among the Companions of the Prophet, may God bless him and grant him peace, and others, regarding hunting and slaughtered animals if they fall into the water, it is not to be eaten. Some of them said regarding the slaughtered animal if it is cut into pieces. If the lokum fell into the water and died in it, then it can be eaten. This is the opinion of Abdullah bin Al-Mubarak. The people of Knowledge in the dog if he eats from game, and most of the people of knowledge said: If the dog eats from it, do not eat. This is the saying of Sufyan. And Abdullah bin Al-Mubarak, Al-Shafi’i, Ahmad, and Ishaq. Some of the people of knowledge among the Companions of the Prophet, may God bless him and grant him peace, and others have permitted it. In eating from it, even if the dog eats from it.
