Jami' at-Tirmidhi — Hadith #28313

Yahya bin Musa told us, he said: Abu Dawud al-Tayalisi told us, he said: Abdul-Wahid bin Sulaym told us, he said: I came to Mecca and met Ata bin Abu Rabah, so I said to him, O Abu Muhammad, the people of Basra speak about fate. He said, “My son, do you recite the Qur’an?” I said, “Yes.” He said, “Read al-Zukhruf.” He said, “So I recited: (Ham* and the clear Book. * Indeed, We have made it an Arabic Qur’an, so that you may understand. * And it is in the Mother of the Book. With us is Ali, the Most Wise.) He said, “Do you know what the mother of the Book is?” I said, “Allah and His Messenger know best.” He said, “It is a book written by Allah.” Before He created the heavens and before He created the earth therein, verily, Pharaoh will be among the people of Hell, and therein: (The hands of Abu Lahab will repent, and he will repent.) Ataa said, “I met Al-Walid bin Ubadah bin Al-Samit, the companion of the Messenger of God, may God bless him and grant him peace, and I asked him what was your father’s will upon death.” He said: My father called me and said to me, “O my son, fear God and know that you will not fear God until you believe in God and believe in destiny, all its good and its evil.” If you die in a state other than this, you will enter Hell. I heard the Messenger of God, may God bless him and grant him peace, say, “Indeed, the first thing that God created was the pen.” So he said, “Write.” He said, “What do I write?” He said, “Write.
