Muhammad bin Bashar narrated to us, Yahya bin Saeed narrated to us, on the authority of Shu’bah, on the authority of Qatada, on the authority of Anas bin Malik, he said: The companions of the Messenger of God May God’s prayers and peace be upon him. They sleep, then they get up and pray, but they do not perform ablution. Abu Issa said: This is a good and authentic hadith. He said: I heard Salih bin Abdullah says: I asked Abdullah bin Al-Mubarak about someone who slept sitting up, and he said that he does not need to perform ablution. Abu Issa said, and he narrated a hadith Ibn Abbas Saeed bin Abi Arouba, on the authority of Qatada, on the authority of Ibn Abbas, his statement, but he did not mention Abu Al-Aaliyah in it, nor did he narrate it. He disagreed. The scholars regarding ablution from sleep, and most of them were of the opinion that it is not obligatory for him to perform ablution if he sleeps sitting or standing until he sleeps lying down. This is what Al-Thawri, Ibn Al-Mubarak, and Ahmad say. He said, and some of them said: If he sleeps until he loses his mind, it is obligatory for him to perform ablution with it. Ishaq says: Al-Shafi’i said: Whoever sleeps sitting down and sees a vision, or his seat is removed due to the Sunnah of sleep, must perform ablution.
